‘bred for eating’ (variation: ‘bred for food’)

This is so often uttered triumphantly by those seeking to justify their eating habits, as if it confers some magical pass from the normal requirement of a species that understands morality, to examine the choices made in life against the values that one claims to stand for.

The beings we exploit are sentient. This means they are self aware, have interests, needs and preferences. They seek to avoid pain and suffering and they do not want to die.

If we believe that causing needless pain and suffering, bullying, slavery, theft, sexual molestation, the destruction of families and murder are wrong, then we need to think again about the phrase ‘bred for eating’ because all these vile practices and many more are hiding behind it. It is not ‘how’ we treat others that is the problem, it is the fact that we exploit them…
